Battlefield Surgical and Anesthesia Care with Licensed Battlefield Guides Dr. Rick Schroeder and Fran Feyock, CRNA
This is a full-day outdoor program. An outdoor program will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by an easy walking tour on mostly even ground from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. After the Missile Finds Its Mark, the morning program, will follow four soldiers from the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry through their wounding in the Wheatfield, to the Field Aid Station, to the Second Corps Field Hospital, ending with their discharge from the Camp Letterman General Hospital. The afternoon program will be A Battlefield Surgical Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference. These conferences are held across the United States today as a litigation-free way for medical professionals to discuss causes of hospital injury, death, and improve surgical care. Although M&M conferences did not exist in 1863, we will use the modern M&M format to discuss the injury and care of well-known personalities from the Battle of Gettysburg. Standing near the locations where they were wounded during the battle, we will discuss the mechanisms of their injury, their surgical care, and ultimate outcome. Then compare the 1863 surgical care they received to modern trauma and surgical practices.
