Join living historians with the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster for a special evening program in the historic barn at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital. Explore the stories of the founding of the original Patriot Daughters of Lancaster, a soldiers’ aid society composed of women from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Learn what these dedicated women did on the home front to support the soldiers. Hear accounts of their trip to Gettysburg in 1863 to help cook and nurse at the Christ Lutheran Church hospital. Discover more about the benevolent women of this important organization and their invitation to lay flowers on President Lincoln’s casket on the funeral train. The presentation will touch on the initiation of the building of the Soldiers and Sailors monument, created in 1874, on Penn Square in Lancaster City.

Since the early 1990s, the reenacted Patriot Daughters of Lancaster have honored the original ladies organized in 1861 along with their Civil War supporters, teamsters, community leaders and the soldiers they nursed and served. A soldiers’ aid society composed of women from Lancaster, the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster was formed after the firing on Fort Sumter. The organization was created to provide money, food, clothing, bandages and supplies for soldiers serving in local companies of Pennsylvania regiments. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the women cared for the wounded at Christ Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg and held sanitary fairs and bazaars to raise money.

The gate will open at 5:30 p.m. on June 14 for ticket holders to explore the meticulously renovated and restored original buildings of the historic site. Parking is available on-site for ticket holders to drive to the event. Tickets are required in advance.

Proceeds from your ticket purchase help to provide a lasting connection to our nation’s next generation while supporting the Gettysburg Foundation’s mission of preservation and education in partnership with the National Park Service at Gettysburg.
