March Encounters with History

Description

March 23, 2024 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Spangler Farm
Quilting of the Civil War - A Hands on Crafting Event with Jef Savage & Nancy Walker

Participants will have the opportunity to create a quilted table runner in a Civil War Era Ohio Star design.

Sewing machines will be available for the duration of this program for those who do not have one and all other tools will also be available. If you have never used a sewing machine before, we will guide you in its use. If you have a sewing machine but have never quilted before, this program is for you and bring your machine!

Participants will learn the skills necessary to make a quilt so that they can go beyond the program and make quilts at home. The sewing machine basics will allow participants to develop portable skills they can take with them at the end of the program. The program includes historical interludes covering Women’s roles on and off the battlefield, history and activities of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, general quilting history with an emphasis on quilts in Adams & Franklin Counties.

This program is for absolute beginners to experience a practical project, learn the history of quilting, its traditional methods and apply it to a modern-day activity.

This Encounters with History will take place at the Kinsley Leadership Center Classroom at the Spangler Farm from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Breakfast and Lunch will be included. Seats are highly limited for this unique hands-on history program.
