"Bruce Catton and the Army of the Potomac Trilogy"
Gary W. Gallagher will address Bruce Catton's Army of the Potomac trilogy – Mr. Lincoln's Army (1951), Glory Road (1952) and A Stillness at Appomattox (1953 and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History). As the editor of a new one-volume, unabridged edition of the trilogy from The Library of America, Gary will examine Catton’s background, his surpassing narrative skill and the many reasons these books, now 70 years old, deserve attention from anyone interested in the most compelling episode in United States history.

Gary W. Gallagher, Ph.D. is the John L. Nau III Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Virginia. He has written or edited more than 40 books, including The American War: A History of the Civil War Era (third edition, 2023; co-authored with Joan Waugh) and The Enduring Civil War: Reflections on the Great American Crisis (2020). Long active in the field of Civil War preservation, Gary was a co-founder and first president of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites, the predecessor of the American Battlefield Trust.
