Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard with Licensed Battlefield Guides Jim Hessler and Britt Isenberg
This is a full-day indoor and outdoor program. A lecture will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Ford Education Center in the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, followed by a moderate walking tour from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. On July 2, 1863, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee ordered skeptical subordinate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet to launch a massive assault against the Union Army’s left flank. Longstreet’s offensive was intended to seize the Peach Orchard and the Emmitsburg Road for use as an artillery position to support the ongoing attack. What followed was some of Gettysburg’s bloodiest and most controversial fighting. The command decisions made in and around the Sherfy property influenced actions on every part of the battlefield. Using their new book Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard, the guides will be discussing the strategies, tactics, and human-interest stories that make the Peach Orchard one of Gettysburg’s most important and underappreciated actions.
