From the Battlefield to the Cyclorama: A Photographic Journey

Description

Dates: May 30, July 25, October 17
Time: 3:00–6:15 p.m.

Stand where the image began.

This new program explores how the Gettysburg landscape was documented, interpreted, and transformed into the Cyclorama, a 360-degree painting that has shaped how generations visualize the battle.

Hosted by Chris Brenneman, a leading authority on the Cyclorama and a Licensed Battlefield Guide, the experience begins with a focused introduction to William Tipton’s 1882 photographs, created to capture the terrain for the artists who would bring the painting to life.

Then you move into the field.

Travel to the exact vantage point where those photographs were taken — originally from a 15-foot platform — and photograph the landscape yourself from the same height and perspective.

Bring your camera!

The program concludes at the Museum & Visitor Center, where you’ll compare your images to the Cyclorama and see how the landscape was interpreted, adapted, and ultimately rendered into one of Gettysburg’s most enduring visual narratives.
