This program explores Gettysburg’s geological landscape and the ways it influenced the events of July 1863. Participants will receive a brief introduction to the fundamentals of geology, journey through more than 500 million years of geological history in just fifteen minutes, and then step into the landscape itself during a short, hands-on walk at the historic Spangler Farm. By connecting deep time to the human drama of the Civil War, this program reveals how the ancient forces that shaped the terrain also helped shape the course of the Battle of Gettysburg. 

  

Note: Walking is less than a half mile on flat but mixed surfaces, including grass, dirt, and most importantly, ROCK. 

 

Britt C. Isenberg is a nonprofit executive, public historian, and author based in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with extensive experience in community engagement, leadership development, and mission-driven programming. His work focuses on connecting audiences to history through innovative educational initiatives, strategic partnerships, and place-based interpretation, with particular emphasis on the landscape and legacy of the American Civil War. A passionate and hopelessly captivated “rockhound,” he also explores the geological story of the local landscape (and far beyond) and its influence on the outcome of the battle. Britt is the author of The Boys Fought Like Demons and The 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, and coauthor (with James A. Hessler) of Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard, which received the Bachelder-Coddington Award. His most recent book, The Second Day at Gettysburg, offers an illustrated interpretation of the battle’s pivotal second day.
