Description
Desert Empire: The 1862 New Mexico Campaign
Often overlooked, even though the climactic battle was referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West" by historians, the 1862 Confederate invasion of New Mexico was a pivotal point in the history of the Southwest and whether the Confederacy could effect a country that went from "sea to shining sea." Learn about the last lancer charge in American military history, a tale about mules and places such as Valverde, Apache Canyon and Glorietta - names not often associated with the American Civil War.
Phillip S. Greenwalt is the co-founder of Emerging Revolutionary War and a full-time historian with Emerging Civil War. He is the author of co-author of seven books on the American Revolution and Civil Wars. He holds a bachelor of arts in history from Wheeling Jesuit University and graduate degrees in American History from George Mason University and International Affairs and Leadership from Arizona State University. He has worked for the last 19 years with the National Park Service and is currently the program manager for interpretation and education at Catoctin Mountain Park. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and, yes, of course a big Orioles fan!
