An Accidental Success—How a Vernal Pool Appeared at the George Spangler Farm
with Civil War Institute Rising Historian, Maddie Ulman

Description

More than fifty years ago, farmers working the George Spangler Farm inadvertently created a rare and valuable wetland. Though the project did not unfold as intended, the resulting vernal pool now supports wildlife uniquely adapted to a seasonally changing habitat.

The program will begin with an indoor presentation exploring vernal pools and the specialized species that depend on them. We will then take a short walk—approximately a quarter mile—to the wetland site to experience some of the springtime magic these remarkable ecosystems are known for with Betsy Leppo, Senior Invertebrate Zoologist with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

Please note:

  • Ticket holders may drive directly to the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital for this program.
  • We will not enter the wetland itself, but conditions may be wet or muddy. Appropriate footwear and weather-appropriate attire are recommended.
