Meade's Pipe Creek Line
with Licensed Battlefield Guide Chris Army
On June 28, 1863 Major General George G. Meade received orders to assume command of the Union Army of the Potomac. Included in those orders were two directives: locate Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army and bring them to battle, and also protect Baltimore & Washington. The Pipe Creek line offered Meade the opportunity to fulfill the second portion of the order. We will examine various points along the Pipe Creek and discuss Meade’s decisions and circumstances developed just prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.
